Travel Guide
Red Centre and Top End Australia

Uluru at sunset, Travel Guide Red Centre Australia

Some places make you feel the distance you've travelled. This is one of them. From the silence of the Red Centre to the wetlands and wildlife of the Top End, this is Australia at its most elemental. Ancient landscapes and living Aboriginal cultures make this part of the country feel wonderfully removed from the everyday.

Best time to visit

  • May – September:  For the Red Centre, the most comfortable time for exploring Uluṟu, Kata Tjuṯa and Kings Canyon. June to August is peak season, with milder days and cool desert nights.

  • May – October:  Top End, the dry season brings warm days, lower humidity and easier access to Kakadu and Litchfield. Also the busiest time.

  • November – April:  Tropical summer brings dramatic storms, full waterfalls and lush landscapes, with fewer visitors and often better value — although flooding can restrict access to some areas.

What to expect

The Red Centre and Top End are two very different sides of the Northern Territory. One is desert, rock and enormous skies; the other tropical wetlands, waterfalls and wildlife.

Together they make an incredible journey, but each deserves enough time to experience it properly. The contrast between them is part of what makes travelling here so memorable.

Planning iconic Australia

This is a journey where the route matters as much as the landmarks. I'll help you work out how to combine the Red Centre and Top End – or when it makes more sense to concentrate on one – with the right balance of road trips, guided experiences and time to simply take it all in.
